HOME TOUR - with Lucia Gordon of Clifton Glamping

Set amongst the rolling hills of coastal farmland, the Clifton Glamping experience is a getaway like no other.
A thoughtfully designed combination of a ‘back to nature’ experience, perfectly paired with the luxury touches and modern conveniences required for a relaxing escape, guests should expect the unexpected from these suprisingly elegant retreats.
Owner, Lucia Gordon, shares with us her vision for the tents and how she achieved it.

Can you briefly describe the Clifton Glamping experience?

We offer a completely unique experience on one of New Zealand’s oldest working farms. It’s 160 years old and seven generations of the Gordon family have lived and farmed here. Clifton Glamping, is the perfect balance of experience and luxury - allowing couples to enjoy the memorable aspects of camping while appreciating the finer comforts of private luxury accommodation.

What are 3 words that describe the interior style of your Glamping Tents?
Sophisticated, ethnic, collected.

What has inspired your styling of the tents?
Our Glamping tents feature rustic tones and textures of African inspiration and touches of Moroccan old-world glamour.

What favourite pieces have you used in your styling?
A driftwood lamp made by my talented mum, using wood from our local beach (pictured below) and also a Chinese antique bathroom vanity (also pictured), sourced by Annabelle’s.
The bathroom at The Toetoe Retreat is an abandoned farm shed. It’s over 150 years old and made from beautiful native timbers. Tom has lovingly restored it and we are so happy with the result.
What does an Autumn or Winter Clifton Glamping experience look and feel like?
As much as we are a summer destination, guests are treated to magnificent hues of gold during Autumn and cool nights paired with fine days in Winter, making them equally good seasons to visit. In the cooler months we invite guests to light the fire in their tent, snuggle up in our fluffy robes and deluxe bedding, run a hot bath and enjoy a cosy glamping escape.

What piece from Annabelle’s is on your wish list right now?
It’s hard to stop dreaming about a new sideboard for the Kowhai retreat, but the Ravello Cushions are to die for. Recently we purchased an Indian Pitara Box and Vintage Display Cabinet for when we move into the Clifton Station homestead at the end of the year – which we love!
